MULTI-LAYER CERAMIC CAPACITORS AND ADVANCED CERAMIC SOLUTIONS Print E-mail

Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors are found by the hundreds in cell phones, mp3 players, computers and other electronic products.  For decoupling applications, in order to store large amounts of energy in a very small product, Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC) are made with advanced ceramic powders.  Many of these powders are based upon barium titanate but often include carefully controlled levels of specific elements to enhance dielectric constant, minimize dielectric loss or reduce variation with temperature and bias voltage.  Oxide powders can be prepared by various methods including hydrothermal, emulsion, coprecipitation, mixed oxide and sol-gel.  In all of these methods, particle size distribution has an important impact on the MLCC's processing and performance.

Particle Size: A Critical Parameter

While the chemical composition of the ceramic has a key effect on the electrical performance, particle size plays a critical role on the processing and performance of the MLCC.  It is critical that the metal oxide nanopowder have a very narrow particle size distribution so that each layer of the capacitor can be made reproducibly thin and defect free.  Presence even a small number of large particles in a layer can affect the reliability of the whole capacitor.  Moreover, too many fine particles could cause issues in the firing conditions during the MLCC processing.
